Cardinals believe they don't need major overhaul The Cardinals took a deep breath during their bye this week, and they'll look to make a fresh start after losing four of their first five games. They realize no magical solution for their problems was going to be found during the bye. And that's OK with them because they steadfastly believe not all that much is wrong.Arizona lost three games by a total of eight points. The fourth loss came to the Vikings because of a horrible first quarter.Perhaps the Cardinals are deceiving themselves, but they think their biggest problem now is a lack of confidence. With three closes losses, players are starting to tighten up, and that's the last thing coach Ken Whisenhunt wants. He didn't beat them up in the bye. The players had two practices, both in shells, and they addressed specific problem areas such as breakdowns in the final two minutes both offensively and defensively, converting on third downs and scoring in the red zone. The Cardinals think they are just a big play away from a turnaround. Even in the blowout loss to the Vikings, they dropped an interception that would have been returned for a touchdown, failed to complete a pass to an open receiver for another score and had another touchdown called back because of a penalty. The failure to make plays, however, is a telling symptom of bad teams everywhere. Every losing team can point to moments in games when making a big play could have turned things around. It'll soon become apparent if the Cardinals are right in believing they are close, or if they are just deceiving themselves. The Cardinals' two-minute offense failed in three of their four losses, so improving upon that has been a point of emphasis the past two weeks.Against the Redskins in Week 2, receiver Chansi Stuckey lost a fumble on first down from the Washington 20 with 1:45 remaining.Kevin Kolb had a pass intercepted late against the Seahawks, and a late scoring chance against the Giants ended when the Cardinals couldn't convert on fourth-and-two. A 10-yard sack on second down contributed to that problem.Obviously, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that with the two-minute, there have been three games for us where we have had a chance, coach Ken Whisenhunt said. It only makes sense to work on that and make sure we get tempo for both sides of the ball in practice. The roots of the problem trace to training camp, when the Cardinals probably didn't devote enough time to two-minute situations. With so many things to work on and no offseason, Whisenhunt didn't feel he had the time. It's a decision he probably regrets and is doing his best to rectify now.Typically, the Cardinals go over their two-minute offense on Thursdays. It has been a half-speed drill, but last week it was changed to full speed. We pulled up the intensity, Kolb said. The last two days here have been great work. It's the most impressive two days of work I think we have had so far. I really believe that. The team's work ethic came into question last Sunday, when Kolb made reference to Whisenhunt's post-game speech. He said the coach hit the nail on the head. We have to get more detail-oriented. It starts with meetings, showing up to work on time, getting in early, getting your work done, and all the stuff a professional is supposed to do. Maybe it takes a game like this to figure out.The implication was that players were slacking off. Whisenhunt said that's not the case, and Kolb said later he had not expressed himself correctly. He meant to say that players should devote additional time to details and making sure they were performing their jobs correctly.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange. While most of the focus surrounding the Rams' matchup with Green Bay Sunday revolves around the question of how the team's undermanned secondary can deal with the Packers' passing attack, part of the equation is having St. Louis' offense move the ball and score points. To do that will require a healthy Steven Jackson and a passing game that can make up for the loss of wide receiver Danny Amendola for the season. The Rams need Austin Pettis and/or Greg Salas to start playing as if they're not rookies.Asked if it's possible to develop the chemistry he had with Amendola with another receiver, quarterback Sam Bradford said, Yeah, there are a lot of guys. I think everyone that is playing in a slot right now. I think that both of the young guys, I think the more reps that they get, and the more comfortable they become. I think more that they could step into that role and kind of become like what Danny was in terms of the shorter and more intermediate routes. Like I said, it just means with Danny not being back, one of our other guys has to step up.Pettis made some plays in the team's Oct. 2 game against Washington, and Bradford said, I think Pettis and Salas both have made tremendous strides since the beginning of the year. I think, obviously having four weeks for them to go through and see what a season is going to be like and what the game speed is going to be like, I think they've got better each week. They need to continue to do that to help us out.Acknowledging that Amendola was a safety valve for Bradford, coach Steve Spagnuolo said, Now again, I sound like a broken record, but somebody's got to step up there. Now, the young guys that are in our program now have to step up and go. They haven't had the foundation that Sam and Danny had, with two years or whatever it's been and didn't have OTAs, so it's catch-up. It's get caught up as quick as you can. But hopefully the young guys can step up there and we can be productive in that part of our offense.Still, Spagnuolo realizes there will be some growing pains with rookies, and he concluded, Hopefully we're over them, but my guess is we'll probably have a few left here.As for Jackson, he said he is fully recovered from a strained quad he suffered on the first play of the season opener, when he ran for a 47-yard touchdown.I feel great, he said. Feel back to the point where I'm 100 percent. I'm able to run, cut, spin, do all those things I was able to do a few weeks ago before the injury. I've regained confidence in the leg, so although it was an early bye for us this season, it's kind of right on time for me and getting me back to the place that I want to be.When NFL offenses practice, it is often said that quarterbacks are throwing on air because of the often going-through-the-motions defense that is played. As the Rams prepare to play the Packers this week, it must look at times as if quarterback Aaron Rodgers is throwing on air in games. So it was that coach Steve Spagnuolo was asked how scary the Green Bay offense is, especially in light of the serious cornerback issues the Rams are facing. They're scary good, Spagnuolo admitted. That's a good word; they're scary good. But we've got players out here, too. We've got to go play the game. We've got to find a way to slow them down and see if we can't have one more point than they do.That will obviously be a tall order.Brian Jackson became the team's fifth cornerback and third signed since the season began when he was added this week. The other two are Josh Gordy and Rod Hood. Gordy was with the Packers as a rookie last season, and was waived in September at the cutdown to 53 players. He is a big guy, long-armed, defensive back, Spagnuolo said of Jackson. He was a playmaker in college. I know he's been a safety, corner, kind of like what Ron Bartell did early in his career. So kind of out of that mold. Now, he's got a long way to go. Certainly, he's got to learn our scheme and our system, but we like some things that he does.Asked how he sees himself, Jackson said, I am a corner, naturally a corner but it's a blessing to be able to play both. I played a preseason game with the Giants at safety and it wasn't that bad so it comes down to what you are capable of doing and I just happen to be capable of doing both.Al Harris is also a former Packer, and was signed as a free agent by the Rams after the lockout ended. He has played about one-third of the plays in the first four games, but will likely be called upon more now that both opening-day starters, Bartell and Bradley Fletcher, are out for the season.Asked if Harris will start, Spagnuolo said, I'm not sure how that will iron out right now. He lined up with the 1s Monday, but we want to take a look at everybody we have. Rod Hood and Al are going to have to play some football for us, otherwise we won't have enough. Justin King he's been a warrior because he has been out there for everything, nickel and corner. So we'll see what happens.Hood, who was signed on Sept. 27 and was inactive for the Oct. 2 game against Washington, said he is also prepared to play. He stayed around during the bye to continue trying to master the defense.I stayed the whole weekend, just trying to get myself in the playbook as much as possible, he said. That's what I'm here for. I ain't got no leisure time. I'm here to work. I'm just trying to get the game plan and learn as much as I can and be ready to go on Sunday. It's unfortunate what happened to Fletch, but it's time for some guys to step up.Spagnuolo expects that to happenRod's picked it up pretty quick, the coach said. He actually stayed around here quite a bit, too. Josh doesn't have quite as much experience as Rod, but Josh has been here a little bit longer, so he has a better feel for it. So somewhere in there we're going to have to find us two corners, obviously, to play the base package and then three of them when you move Justin inside.Another one to play in any kind of nickel or dime package. We've got to find ways to be productive as a defense. It's not just about one position or two positions, it's a whole defense. As 11 guys we've all got to step it up and play better.Hood believes there's no reason why he can't go out and make plays this week.I've been playing the game for nine years, I mean, professionally, he said. Skill level always has been there. I think when you get to this level, and you've been playing for a while, the skill is there. It's just all about understanding and recognizing the scheme.Hood also said he doesn't expect the coaches to scale back anything. It's all about communication, he said. And being aggressive.SEREIS HISTORY 90th regular-season meeting. Rams lead series, 45-42-2. The Packers have won the last two games in the series in 2007 and 2009 and both were played in St. Louis. Don't ask home fans, but Crosby's perfect Mason Crosby is off to the best start in his five years as the Packers kicker, but what has been missing is some home cooking.Crosby is 9-for-9 on field goals after the first five games, and all of the attempts have come in Green Bay's three road contests.I talked to him the other day, about having an opportunity to maybe kick some field goals in Lambeau Field, head coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday.McCarthy stopped short of making a concerted effort to send Crosby out for a field-goal try in Sunday's home game against the St. Louis Rams, saying, I hope we're scoring touchdowns.Crosby is coming off a 4-for-4 effort on field goals equaling his career high for makes in a game in the Packers' 25-14 win at Atlanta on Sunday night. He made a 56-yard kick, matching the team record he set in the first game of the 2010 season.Crosby was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday, the third such honor of his career.Accuracy, or lack thereof, has been an issue for Crosby in the past. He came into this season with an unimpressive conversion rate of 77.9 percent on field goals in all games played.Since the end of last season, however, Crosby has made his last 16 field-goal tries in the regular season one short of Chris Jacke's club record. It's the third-longest active streak in the league, behind Atlanta's Matt Bryant 23 and Detroit's Jason Hanson 21.Counting the postseason run to the Super Bowl title, Crosby has connected on 19 of his last 20 field-goal attempts. If K Mason Crosby goes another game at Lambeau without a field goal, he will have to wait a long time to get the first one of the season there. The Packers' next home contest after Sunday's won't be until a Monday night game against the NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 14. The 28 days between home dates is the longest for Green Bay since 2003, when it had a similar break between losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime Oct. 12 and also losing to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 10.This year's Packers are in the midst of playing only two home games in a span of 66 days after they hosted the NFL opener Sept. 8 against the New Orleans Saints. The only other game at Lambeau in the first part of the schedule was Green Bay's rout of the Denver Broncos on Oct. 2.Green Bay will sandwich road games against the Vikings on Oct. 23 and the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 6 around its bye before the next home game.Aaron Rodgers is making the transition from wearing his favorite pair of game-day shoes to donning his preferred game-day pants. The quarterback is stoked about the Packers having throwback uniforms for Sunday's game. They are the same uniforms Green Bay wore in its 34-16 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Dec. 5 last season. The navy blue jersey with the player's number set inside a gold circle on the front, tan pants and brown helmets are patterned after the attire worn by the Packers' first NFL title team in 1929.Love them, love them, love them, Rodgers said. I'll be honest, I looked at the picture of the uniform last year, and I was a little bit weary of, 'What's that going to look like?' But, I'll tell you what, and you'll probably hear it from some other guys, the pants that we have are the most comfortable pants. I've been looking forward to this game all year because of those pants.I don't know what the problem is, why we can't get the same material during every other game. But, I'm telling you, these brown pants, whatever, tan, are so comfortable.Rodgers went 21-of-30 passing for 298 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in last year's throwback game.He had his Nike Air Speed Destroyer lacrosse shoes on for last Sunday's win over the Falcons inside the Georgia Dome, throwing for 396 yards and two touchdowns.Green Bay has a 4-3 record when it's worn throwback uniforms since 1994.Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo will gladly take any help he can get as he tries to snap his injury-ravaged and underachieving team out of a 0-4 start this season.St. Louis is a 15-point underdog against the unbeaten Packers on Sunday, but the Rams have some familiarity with Green Bay even though they're non-division foes. The St. Louis roster includes four players who were with the Packers within the last year: the veteran duo of Pro Bowl CB Al Harris and LB Brady Poppinga and the first-year tandem of CB Josh Gordy and RB Quinn Porter.Harris and Poppinga are expected to be in the starting lineup Sunday.I think both of those guys have helped us in a lot of ways, Spagnuolo said. Al has been the guy that's been around 14th NFL season, and he'll certainly help us.Gordy also could contribute on defense as a nickel or dime back. Porter has been a versatile special-teams player, including returning kickoffs.BY THE NUMBERS 12 Longest winning streak in Packers history, which was achieved in a span covering the 1961 and '62 seasons. Green Bay currently has won 11 straight games, going back to last season.QUOTE TO NOTE What I really get impressed with is obviously he's a smart, intelligent quarterback, talented, and I think he's surrounded with what look to be a lot of other smart football players, and you put a lot of intelligence on the field with a lot of talent and you get the results that they've been having. St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, on top-rated quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange. Any time Carson Palmer's name is mentioned, there usually is a flurry of speculation about whether the Bengals will deal him, especially with Tuesday's NFL trade deadline approaching.Team president Mike Brown reiterated Thursday, though, that there are no plans to trade Palmer.I don't have anything more to say on that. I've had my say on that, and it remains all there is to say, Brown said.Brown said no trades were likely and that none were even being discussed. Seattle and Miami have long been rumored to be interested in Palmer if he were available.Palmer was slated to make 11 million this season. With the first five games missed, it is now down to 7.6 million. If he would walk in Friday and if the team chose to fine him 30,000 a day for each day missed, he would make 5.33 million. With Andy Dalton leading the Bengals to a 3-2 record going into Sunday's game against Indianapolis, Brown was asked if he felt the second-round pick were indeed his quarterback of the future, which might make Brown more inclined to trade Palmer down the road.Brown said of Dalton: I think he's our quarterback right now, and he's doing very well. I'm pleased with how he's doing and think he can be the guy here.Jay Gruden's West Coast scheme was supposed to be an improvement for the Bengals' offense. After five games, things aren't looking much different than they have the past couple of years. The Bengals 3-2 have shown more balance over the past two games, but they enter Week 6 ranked 22nd in total offense. Cincinnati has been 20th or worse in offense each of the past three seasons. While everyone knew there would be a growing period for rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and rookie receiver A.J. Green, the biggest disappointment has been the running game. Cedric Benson does have two 100-yard games, but at times he has not made good reads or the blocking has been subpar.Benson is second in the league with 101 carries, but his average of 4.0 yards per carry is the lowest among the top 10 running backs in the AFC. The Jaguars game was reminiscent of many games last year where the runs were few and far between. After being frustrated over how things went in the win over Buffalo, Benson was more self-reflective after the Jacksonville game, in which he was held to a season-low 53 yards on 24 carries. It definitely wasn't my best game. I definitely will improve. Nothing like that will ever happen again, he said. You have to take advantage of the few opportunities you get, especially in a crazy game like that.Another thing that might be frustrating Benson is that he has not been on the field at key times in the fourth quarter the last two games. On the game-winning drive against the Bills, Cincinnati used Brian Leonard, who is a third-down specialist but also the best receiving back on the team. Against Jacksonville, Bernard Scott was on the field for the game-winning drive. For a player who expects and demands a lot of carries, that can be difficult to take. It also could be a problem in the future. Benson has tried to keep his frustrations to a low boil, but it could only be a matter of time before the frustration becomes more vocal. When asked if he thought Benson was still buying into the offense, Gruden said he did.The better we get, the more he'll buy in, Gruden said. He's going to have to because it's going to get tougher every week. If everyone doesn't buy in, we don't have a chance. We need him to buy in for us to have a chance because he's the big back that you need in big games.Scott brings a different dynamic to the running game, as he is quicker and more of an outside back, but teams have picked up on those tendencies, which is why the draw play up the middle on third down for the go-ahead touchdown against the Jaguars was a great call. After saying for three weeks that he was going to get Scott more carries, head coach Marvin Lewis took control of the substitution pattern during the Jacksonville game.Another problem for the run game is that Benson's immediate future is in limbo due to the appeal of his three-game suspension for a repeated violation of the personal-conduct policy that occurred during the lockout. Benson met with the National Labor Relations Board on Tuesday over his unfair labor practice charge against the NFL Players Association, but a decision could take three to four weeks. The Bengals are averaging 107.6 rushing yards per game, which is 12 yards more than last year. The Colts, Cincinnati's opponent this week, are ranked next to last in run defense, which was the same ranking they held last year when the two teams faced each other. Proving that rankings sometimes don't mean a thing, Benson was held to 24 yards on 14 carries in the Bengals' 23-17 loss.I've got no problem with any of the three backs. I like them all, Gruden said. They all bring something to the table. Leonard is probably the most steady of the three as far as blitz pickups, route running. Obviously Cedric is great between the tackles. He can carry the load for you, and B-Scott's got the big-play ability. We just haven't been able to shake one loose yet, but they're coming. We just have to stick with it. Just keep going and get better at certain areas of the blocking. But it seemed like we're one guy away from breaking some big ones.SERIES HISTORY 25th regular-season meeting. Colts lead series, 16-8. The Bengals have lost seven straight in the series, including a 23-17 game in Indianapolis last year. The Bengals haven't beaten the Colts since 1997, when they posted a 28-13 win in Indianapolis.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange. 5 early point spreads to keep an eye on We’ve been tracking the line movements for the 13 NFL games scheduled for Week 6 and have come across some interesting information in the process. The following five point spreads have experienced some of the most movement since opening at the Las Vegas Hilton Sunday evening. To track the lines or see what the betting public is up to, check out the NFP Sportsbook Sniper.Last week’s record: 3-2 (3-2 overall) & nbsp; &nbs p; & nbsp; &nbs p; & nbsp; &nbs p; & nbsp; &nbs p; & nbsp; &nbs p; & nbsp; &nbs p; HOUSTON TEXANS (3-2, 1-1 road) at BALTIMORE RAVENS (3-1, 2-0 home)Time: 4:05pm eastern Opening line: Ravens -5.5 Current line: Ravens -8 (2.5-point swing) Current betting patterns: 65% of bets placed are on BaltimoreAnalysis: Did you really expect something different? Mario Williams(notes) and Andre Johnson(notes) are out for the Texans, while the Ravens are rested and refreshed coming off their Week 5 bye. Keep in mind that Baltimore is 4-0 against the Texans since 2002 and is 8-2 against the spread in their last ten games coming off a bye. The oddsmakers opened this game too low and early Baltimore bettors may find themselves with a nice middle opportunity come Sunday morning, should the line continue to move in the Ravens’ direction.Interesting trend: The Texans are 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games and 0-4 against the spread in their last four games as an underdog.Pick: Ravens -6.5 (got it early in the week)CAROLINA PANTHERS (1-4, 0-2 road) at ATLANTA FALCONS (2-3, 1-1 home)Time: 1:00pm eastern Opening line: Falcons -6 Current line: Falcons -4 (2-point swing) Current betting patterns: 54% of bets placed are on AtlantaAnalysis: Last year it would have been unthinkable for the line to move towards a 1-4 underdog playing on the road at Atlanta, but these aren’t the Falcons we all know and love from 2011…and this isn’t the same, underperforming Panthers team from years past as well. Cam Newton(notes) and the Panthers are 4-0-1 against the spread this season and have been playing some highly competitive football, while the Falcons are just 1-4 against the spread this season and have been underperforming, to say the least…hence the movement in Carolina’s direction.Interesting trend: The Panthers have covered the spread in four straight games while the Falcons are 1-4 against the spread in their last five games as a favorite.Pick: Panthers +4SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (4-1, 2-0 road) at DETROIT LIONS (5-0, 2-0 home)Time: 1:00pm eastern Opening line: Lions -5 Current line: Lions -4 (1-point swing) Current betting patterns: 70% of bets placed are on DetroitAnalysis: A Week 5 blowout win over Tampa Bay, a 2-0 road record and an opponent coming off a Monday night game are three likely reasons why this line has moved towards the 49ers. Still, the Lions are 4-0-1 against the spread this season and in addition, I find myself asking if this 49ers team is as good as their record indicates. Jim Harbaugh has his squad playing some tough, aggressive football, but do you really feel comfortable going against the Lions with Alex Smith under center for the Niners?Interesting trend: The Lions are 18-6-2 against the spread in their last 26 games overall and 10-0-1 against the spread in their last 11 games following a straight up win.Pick: Lions -4 (but I’ve got an uneasy feeling about this one)INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (0-5, 0-2 road) at CINCINNATI BENGALS (3-2, 1-1 home)Time: 1:00pm eastern Opening line: O/U 38 Current line: O/U 41 (3-point swing) Current betting patterns: 92% of bets placed are on the OVERAnalysis: Professional handicapper Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis.com did an excellent job breaking down this game for my Wednesday column, so I’ll leave the analysis to him. You guys can check it out by CLICKING HERE.Interesting trend: The OVER is 4-0 in the Colts’ last four games overall and 4-1 in the Bengals’ last four games overall.Pick: OVER (buy the half point to 40.5)BUFFALO BILLS (4-1, 1-1 road) at NEW YORK GIANTS (3-2, 1-1 home)Time: 1:00pm eastern Opening line: O/U 48.5 Current line: O/U 50 (1.5-point swing) Current betting patterns: 82% of bets placed are on the OVERAnalysis: Buffalo currently ranks third in the NFL in scoring (32.8 pts/gm) while New York ranks ninth (25.4 pts/gm), so you can see why this total started moving north. Add in the fact that the OVER is 8-1-1 in the ten games played by these two teams this season and you have a line that will probably continue moving right up until kickoff. If you’re waiting for me to give you a reason why the UNDER looks like a good play, get comfortable because it’s going to be a while.Interesting trend: The OVER is 4-0 in the Bills’ last four games as an underdog and 5-1-1 in the Giants’ last seven home games.Pick: OVER 50Hit me up on Twitter: @JoeFortenbaugh &nb sp; &nb sp; &nb sp; DeAngelo Hall Jersey Authentic, cheap nfl jerseys china, Devin Hester Jersey, Authentic Ronnie Brown Jersey, Ronnie Brown Jersey, Authentic Colts Reggie Wayne Jersey, DeAngelo Hall Authentic Jersey, Clinton Portis Jersey Authentic, Redskins DeAngelo Hall Jersey, Colts Reggie Wayne Authentic Jersey, Colts Reggie Wayne Jersey

Ben Wallace waives drunk driving exam, could avoid jail time "In a move that might spare him jail time, Detroit Piston Ben Wallace waived his right to a district court exam on drunken driving and weapons offenses Monday, choosing instead to send the matter to Oakland County Circuit Court. In waiving his right to a preliminary exam before 48th District Judge Kimberly Small, Wallace may avoid certain time behind bars. Small has a reputation for sentencing first-time drunken drivers to jail.Wallace's next court date is an Oct. 11 arraignment before Circuit Judge Shalina Kumar, which might be done by mail, his attorney Steven Fishman told reporters outside court Monday. Asked to predict what type of sentence — if any — Wallace could ultimately expect, Fishman did not rule out probation." Labor talks reach pivotal stage "The NBA's owners and players on Monday continued the quest for a meeting of minds that might end the lockout, now 95 days old, and allow the regular season to begin as scheduled on Nov. 1.With participation on Monday limited to five representatives on the league side and five on the players' side, the table was set for another large group meeting today that promises to tell the tale on the start of the regular season."A lot of signs point to tomorrow being a very huge day, a lot of pressure on all of us in the room," union president Derek Fisher said. "We'll accept that responsibility, go in and see if we can get it worked out."Spurs owner Peter Holt, who chairs the owners' labor relations committee, missed Monday's meeting but is to return for today's session. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, chairman of the owners' executive committee, replaced Holt on Monday." L.A. Lakers Prepare Refund Policy "NBA Lockout talks will continue on Friday with hopes on both sides that by the end of the weekend a resolution can be reached. There remains a sizable gulf between what the owners and players are looking for but the window for labor peace remains open, at least for a few days more. Much longer and the owners will start to cancel regular season games and/or the season. Will basketball start on time with the only true casualty some (relatively) unimportant preseason exhibitions or will the deeper-pocketed owners try to bleed out the players whose paychecks would stop coming in mid-November (in most cases)?Whatever the answer, the Los Angeles Lakers have taken precautions in case part or all of the season is cancelled." FIU/NBA tickets sell out; scalpers driving up prices "In less time than it takes to play an NBA game, all available tickets were snapped up Monday for Saturday's 7 p.m. NBA lockout all-star exhibition at Florida International University.Within an hour of the noon start of sales, all of the $100 lower-level reserved seats were gone for the game that will feature Miami Heat stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. In less than two hours, the remainder of the $50 upper-level seats were sold out, as well. While the game will be played at 5,000-seat U.S. Century Bank Arena, ongoing renovations and other logistics will reduce capacity closer to 4,000.The limited ticket supply created a frenetic scene at the University Credit Union Box Office at FIU Stadium, with some windows accepting credit cards and others cash only. There were no phone or online orders taken for the event, marketed as, "LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh present the South Florida All-Star Classic."" "Here is the NBA lockout in a nutshell as Monday morning becomes Monday afternoon._ There is a small group meeting ongoing right now. Only the heavy hitters are in attendance, including David Stern and Adam Silver from the league office, Derek Fisher and Billy Hunter from the Players Association, plus some support staff on both sides. There will be a larger meting Tuesday with the negotiating committees from both sides. Hunter is encouraging extra players to attend. Beyond Tuesday lies the great unknown, but at some point this week we should expect the NBA to cancel the remainder of the preseason schedule." Kobe Bryant's overseas venture would weaken players union "Should Kobe Bryant play overseas, it could help spur momentum into a new collective bargaining agreement. That might happen, however, because the move would just further weaken the players union. It would send a message to NBA owners that fighting for a larger share of basketball-related income, instituting a soft cap and eliminating guaranteed contracts would come at the price of one of the league's fixtures taking his talents and marketing brand elsewhere. But it would also provide two painful reminders to the players union surrounding the NBA lockout. If Bryant's busy playing overseas, it's less likely he would take time and effort in helping the union fight for a deal that would at least reduce the magnitude of the owners' inevitable victory in the negotiations. It would also illustrate Bryant as one of the few who can financially afford a lost season and still make a cushy income. Meanwhile, middle-tier talent would either settle for inexpensive deals or remain idle as both parties nervously await lost paychecks. " A calm David Stern is an effective David Stern "Imagine a hostile encounter between men less refined than David Stern and Dwyane Wade. Instead of utilizing words and gestures, they might resort to a physical battle. That would likely work against the 69-year-old NBA commissioner, who is far more skilled in the art of oratory than fisticuffs. That's not to say he is incapable of using his hands. It was one of those waving in the air with a finger extended that irritated the 29-year-old Wade, and we are to presume that it wasn't even the middle finger.Numerous reports from writers who have been credited on this site indicated that in a collective bargaining meeting last week, Wade objected to an animated Stern and apparently proved capable of raising his voice to Stern-like levels. Wade was described as admonishing Stern by yelling, "Don't point your finger at me; I'm not your child," or words close to that. That had to be sobering for Stern because generally speaking, his yelling matches are one-sided.Behind closed doors, Stern is comfortable in a high-decibel atmosphere, and his management philosophy is that screaming can be terribly productive, rather than simply terrible." Kobe, Bologna working 'intensely' on deal UpdatedOct 3, 2011 6:44 PM ETROME (AP)Kobe Bryant's representatives and Virtus Bologna are ''working very intensely'' to bring the Los Angeles Lakers' star to Italy during the NBA lockout.GOING ABROADKobe, Italian club working on dealAgent: K-Mart heading to ChinaMavs' Fernandez staying in SpainNuggets F rejoining Italian clubJ.R. Smith signs with Chinese teamDeron Williams reports to TurkeyWilson Chandler going to ChinaStern: Going overseas a bad ideaBologna President Claudio Sabatini had told The Associated Press on Friday he had reached a tentative deal with agent Rob Pelinka for a 10-game contract worth more than $3 million. The Italian team and Bryant's management said in a joint statement Monday they are ''working very intensely to try and create this important deal. Reaching such a complex deal requires both sides' maximum attention for every little detail.''''Everyone wants a positive outcome to the deal, the goal of which is Kobe Bryant's presence in Italy, economic interests for the 17 clubs in Serie A and more attention for all of Italian basketball,'' the statement added. The deal, however, hinges on other clubs changing their schedules to ensure Bologna has five home games during Bryant's 10-game contract. Bologna also wants its opening five away games played in Italy's biggest arenas, and wants to avoid an early-season bye.Smaller clubs Cremona and Varese have been reluctant to alter their schedules, although the Italian league said Saturday it was intervening to help spur an agreement.''I hope that very shortly we'll have a deal,'' Sabatini told the ANSA news agency. ''I want to thank Kobe, who demonstrated again overnight that he wants to return to Italy.''Bologna would need to have the deal signed by the end of this week to register Bryant before its opening game with Roma on Sunday.LYING AROUND?What are NBA players doing during the lockout? You may be surprised.''But even if he's available for the second game, that's not a problem for us,'' Sabatini said. ''We're very confident, but we're waiting for news tonight.''With Venezia recently added as a 17th team, the Italian league released its full schedule Monday. Although it could be changed again if Bryant signs with Bologna. After hosting Roma, Bologna visits Avellino the following weekend, then plays at Olimpia Milano, which recently signed Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari. In the following seven rounds, Bologna has home games with Cremona, Varese and Sassari; away games with Teramo, Montegranaro - which is in talks with Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani - and Biella; and a bye in the eighth week.Bryant lived in Italy between ages 6 and 13 while his father played in the country. He still speaks fluent Italian and has said it would be a ''dream'' to play in the country. In New York on Saturday, NBA owners and players failed to reach a new labor deal after about seven hours of talks focused mostly on the league's salary cap structure. The sides were meeting again Monday, though time is getting short to save the scheduled start of the regular season on Nov. 1.
